(A reflection on Verse Three)
On the interstate a sign flashes, punctuating the night
“Terror Alert! Report all suspicious activity!”
Yellow shriek for vigilance against the enemy out there
Hiding in the crimson sea of taillights
Better to look under my hood for the real culprit
A revving engine oiled by self-centered thoughts
Fueled by a feast of high-octane emotions
With pistons pounding hope and fear
Better if the sign said “Ego Alert!”
Reminding this off-duty cop to patrol inner roads
Radar set to detect malice in my own heart
Thus — one suspect disarmed and under close surveillance —
The world would be a little safer
